What This Calculator Does

Calculate tiles and grout needed for an area.

It combines Area Length, Area Width, Tile Size, Grout Line Width to estimate Tiles Needed, Grout Bags (25 lb), Base Area.

Formula & Method

Area with waste is A_t=L\cdot W\left(1+\frac{w}{100}\right). Effective tile footprint is A_{tile}=\frac{(s+g)^2}{144} (sq ft), where s is tile size in inches and g is grout width in inches. Tiles needed: N=\left\lceil\frac{A_t}{A_{tile}}\right\rceil.

Notation used in the formulas: R = Tiles Needed; x_{1} = Area Length; x_{2} = Area Width; x_{3} = Tile Size; x_{4} = Grout Line Width; x_{5} = Waste Factor.

Method summary: inputs are normalized to consistent units, core equations are evaluated, then secondary values are derived and rounded for display.

Use this calculator for quick scenario analysis. Start with baseline values, change one driver at a time, and compare how sensitive the results are to each input shown above.
