What This Calculator Does

Identify your estimated marginal bracket and effective rate so you can interpret incremental tax impact from additional income.

It combines Taxable Income, Filing Status to estimate Marginal Tax Rate, Effective Tax Rate, Total Federal Tax.

Formula & Method

Core equations: Federal tax is computed progressively across 2024 brackets: T = \sum_{k} r_k \times \min(\text{Income} - L_k,\; U_k - L_k) where r_k is the rate for bracket k with lower bound L_k and upper bound U_k. The effective rate is: r_{eff} = \frac{T}{\text{Taxable Income}} \times 100 Inputs are applied in base units, then derived metrics are computed from the same equations and rounded for display.

Notation used in the formulas: R = Marginal Tax Rate; x_{1} = Taxable Income; x_{2} = Filing Status.

Method summary: inputs are normalized to consistent units, core equations are evaluated, then secondary values are derived and rounded for display.

Use this when evaluating bonuses, side-income, or retirement withdrawals that may shift your tax exposure.

Inputs Used

  • Taxable Income: Your taxable income after deductions
  • Filing Status: Used directly in the calculation.
