What This Calculator Does

Compute realized return from price change and dividends so performance can be compared across different holding periods.

It combines Purchase Price per Share, Current/Sale Price per Share, Number of Shares, Annual Dividend per Share to estimate Total Return, Annualized Return, Capital Gain/Loss.

Formula & Method

Core equations: Total return combines capital gains and dividends: R = (P_{current} - P_{purchase}) \times N + D \times N \times t Annualized return: r_{annual} = \left(\frac{V_{final} + D_{total}}{V_{initial}}\right)^{1/t} - 1 where N is the number of shares and t is the holding period in years. Inputs are applied in base units, then derived metrics are computed from the same equations and rounded for display.

Notation used in the formulas: R = Total Return; x_{1} = Purchase Price per Share; x_{2} = Current/Sale Price per Share; x_{3} = Number of Shares; x_{4} = Annual Dividend per Share; x_{5} = Holding Period.

Method summary: inputs are normalized to consistent units, core equations are evaluated, then secondary values are derived and rounded for display.

Use this for portfolio review, trade evaluation, and annualized return benchmarking across positions.
